Good communication 
does not simplify technology

Complex technologies do not need simplified messages, they need comprehensible explanations. Good communication does not reduce the substance of an innovation – it creates understanding of its meaning and context.

Hardly any sentence is heard more often in technology-driven companies. Whether artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductor technologies or digital infrastructure – many innovations emerge in highly specialised fields and initially address people who speak the same language. But as soon as these technologies need to be conveyed to investors, journalists, policymakers or potential customers, the concern arises that their complexity can hardly be communicated adequately.

That assumption falls short.

Technologies are complex because they solve complex problems. Nobody expects to become an expert in large language models, quantum computing or zero-trust architectures within a few minutes. People do, however, want to understand why a development is relevant, which problem it solves and what impact it may have on companies, markets or society.

This is exactly where communication begins.

It does not consist of simplifying technical matters as far as possible. Its task is to provide orientation. Good communication translates expertise into a context that different audiences can follow. It does not change the substance of an innovation, but the perspective from which it is explained.

That is a decisive difference.

Anyone who merely reduces complexity often loses precisely what makes a technology special. Sophisticated solutions turn into interchangeable buzzwords. Scientific expertise turns into marketing messages. What is meant to appear easier to understand often loses its credibility.

In technology-driven markets in particular, audiences expect more than simple messages. Journalists look for robust context. Investors want to understand technological developments and their economic implications. Customers are interested not only in features, but in the concrete benefit and the long-term perspective of a solution. Communication therefore has to explain not less, but better.

This requires communication to begin where technologies are created. Anyone who wants to convey innovation comprehensibly has to understand its origins, its limits and its significance. Good communication therefore emerges in dialogue between engineering, management and communications – not only once a product is market-ready or a press release needs to be written.

Equally important is the insight that comprehensibility does not mean the same thing for every audience. A trade journalist needs different information than an investor. A policymaker asks different questions than a potential customer. Successful communication therefore does not look for the one perfect message. It develops different narrative perspectives for different audiences without changing the core of a technology.

In the age of generative AI, this capability becomes even more important. Technological developments accelerate while their societal and economic implications grow more complex. Companies that cannot explain their innovations comprehensibly leave the interpretation to others – to the media, to competitors or to AI systems drawing on publicly available information.

Communication thus becomes a strategic act of translation. It connects research with the public, technical excellence with economic relevance, and innovation with trust. Its goal is not to make complexity disappear. Its goal is to make it understandable.

Anyone who sees communication solely as an instrument of simplification underestimates its actual value. It creates not less complexity, but more understanding. And that is precisely where its significance for technology-driven companies lies.
